Hi. My name is Erricia Bailey. I am the owner and general manager of Image Right Consultancy Services but, just like you, I had to get started some place. I studied the full suite of sciences in secondary school; Chemistry, Physics, Biology. In those days, subjects were not chosen individually but, rather, your option was to select from a group of subjects. The groups were Science, Business, Modern 1, Modern 2, and Home Economics. Of course Home Economics was eventually phased out as it was looked upon as the class for ‘duncey head’ children. With that, the new ‘duncey head’ class became the business class. The perception was that, when going to form 4, the smart kids would go to the Science class and the ones who were under-performing academically would automatically be thrown into the Business class.

How Time Files

That was twenty years ago. With the advent of entrepreneurship there is less negative connotations attached to doing business. In this digital age, if you are not doing business what are you really doing? I continued on to A’levels where I did Biology, Physics, Literature and Math and I had no idea what I was going to do with that combination.

From there I went to the John Donaldson Technical Institute where I studied Telecommunications Engineering; really because I had nothing else to do and I wanted to still be in school. After that I did Computer Engineering, a Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Applied Information Systems Technology, followed by a Master of Science Degree in Industrial Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Management and finally a Professional Certificate in Events Management. I have spent a grand total of 28 years going to school.

I was not satisfied though until I did my Masters, which somehow ended up being in Entrepreneurship. It was then that I found my purpose, my calling, my passion. Can you guess where my business life started? Selling Avon back in 2007. I am certain many others can say the same. This is where I got my first taste of providing solutions for people.

Business has now morphed from being for ‘duncey head’ kids, especially with the turn of the economy, to not just being accepted but needed for survival. Small businesses around the globe account for a significant portion of employment and contribute highly to each country’s gross domestic product, GDP. Many have the desire but few have the diligence to be able to turn an idea into a commercially viable product or service.

The life of an entrepreneur is not at all what it is glamoured up to be. It is hard work, smart work, innovation, persistence, creativity and sacrifice. Although it is challenging, it is very rewarding when you when your soul is in it.

I was told I wasn’t good enough to do business. I was also told that I was too educated to do business. I still chose to do it and I will continue to choose to do it for a very simple reason. I’m a problem solver and it overwhelms my heart when I am able to meet people at the point of their need with a solution. Knowing that I have provided information or a service that brought about clarity to someone else’s business or vision for business is a genuinely satisfying feat that keeps me humble.
